Today I attended the Van Mag awards it was awesome. I showed up for work today and everyone said, “we are going to the Van Mag awards”. They handed me a glass of champagne. I mingled and tasted wine. Then I rushed back to work to prep and Travis and I had a good night. It was a good day at Boneta.

  2. Crust says:

There were so many people that I didn’t see that say they were there! I had to leave at the begining of the awards to prep for that night, I left at 3:30.

We could have crossed paths. We had about an hour and a half of leeway. But yes, there were a HELL of a lot of people there!

I am from Saskatchewan… what are VanMag Awards?

  5. Colleen says:

Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards. Big industry do. Lots of food, booze, awards, people…..lots of people.

I had a friend ask me how many people I figured that I knew in the room. My guess was about 150-200. And that was about a third to a half of how many people were there.

Christie, it is your job when you go to industry events to talk to as many people as you can. Stick with someone that you know knows a lot of people and is social and hang with them. Then ask to be introduced to whomever you are interested in, or volunteer your name. The more networking you do at these events, the more opportunities will come your way. Get your name known, get your face known, and keep writing on this blog. (And, it goes without saying, do good, honest, hard work at your job.) Good things will come your way so much faster.

    You go girl!

Probably the reason we didn’t see each other was because I was looking for specific people to talk to, to help me with my next moves in this industry. I was on a mission. And I can tell you right now, I talked to the right people. I can now move forward with my plans.

I cannot stress enough the power of networking in this small town/industry.

Thanks Colleen! I love how positive and encouraging you are.

Well, I know how hard it is to get ahead in this industry, especially for a woman. We girls have to stick together. That said, I have given that advice to many young cooks in this industry. A lot of them don’t take it, or are to intimidated or afraid to act on it. Panic and fear are the enemy in this biz.

Keep a cool head, a helping hand, a few tricks up your sleeve, and be an active part of the industry…….things happen.

Glad you enjoyed the awards – I think I checked in 5 billion attendees at the registration desk/coat check (/stint of voluntary slave labour), so I most likely saw you pass by.

Nice to know the event was pleasant for attendees – that was the point!

cool, did you see me get my coat all sketchy like, running back for service?
