De Kas Farm 2

Food — By Crust on August 30, 2009

Poor little grumpy bunny. The owner just took over the growing at De Kas because his old grower got hired by the city to garden for them, which is a great honor. It makes me think that as a cook I could learn to grow this kind of stuff. He gave me a copy of his crop rotations and what times of the year he grows what.

Land…..hmmmmm. Where to find the land to do this? Out of curiousity, how much land does he have for the farm?

  2. Crust says:

The farm isn’t that big, I didn’t ask the size but I could see from one side to the other, and we walked around almost the whole thing. He also has friends with patches of land near by that grow things and he buys off them. I think as soon as one crop is harvested they plant a different thing right away to get as much out of the growing season as possible. The plastic greenhouses are hot inside all year and they are big, there are about 6 of them.

Is it weird I recognize your hand? The farm looks like it makes for an inspiring place to work. Is this place in the city or just outside??

  4. Crust says:

I would recognize your cold little sausage fingers if I saw them! The farm is a 15 min drive from the restaurant. There is lots of beautiful pastures and small farms all around Amsterdam, and Amsterdam isn’t very big.
