Greenhouse Vegetables

We did a catering this weekend and none of the pictures turned out (sorry other mom) except for the ones of the spring vegetables we got from greenhouses and the farmers market. It is hard to scout out these vegetables this time of year but I was persistent and gathered them from many different local sources. The radishes are from my friend Jon’s efficient little garden. I also gathered some wild roses with my mom to put in the spring greens salad. I’m still so confused about the seasons here, spring greens are ready and not much else unless from a greenhouse but it is summer! In Vancouver we would be into summer vegetables by now. I’ll have it figured by next year.

    Not this year in Vancouver. Everything is late this year. The weather has sucked.

    Colleen’s right. The weather is so weird here that my Arugula bolted before it was even big enough to eat. We did eat some micro arugula though. The strawberries are also really tiny and just starting to come now. Hot yesterday and today but rain again tomorrow : (

    Lots of summer veg coming on before the spring stuff is ready, really odd. Much of the seeds planted in the early spring (carrot, radish, pea, bean, etc) rotted in the ground due to the cold, damn start so they had to be re-sewn and are coming up now. However, many of the inside starts (squash, tomatoes, peppers) had a nice cozy start indoors and will be producing more or less on time. First baby summer squash came last week, but have yet to sea local peas or carrots, unless green house grown.

    One farmer called it the year of the bumbleberry pie, as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries would all be ready at the same time.
